Pencil Drawing: A Beginner’s Guide
Why do artists choose to draw portraits with a pencil?

Pencil drawing can help you look more closely at shapes, light and expression. A pencil is a versatile tool for exploring these details, from a quick sketch to a carefully finished portrait.

Are pencil drawings suitable for beginners?
If you want to start drawing, drawing with a pencil is particularly suitable. The reason for this is that many techniques can be used and learned when drawing with a pencil, such as shading with the side of the pencil, hatching and blending.

Getting Started With Pencil Drawing
Staying motivated can be difficult at first. Regular practice and small challenges help you build confidence. Focus on your own progress rather than comparing your early drawings with someone else’s finished work.

Practise One Feature at a Time
If you look at the learning curve, you should start slowly and not rush anything. When drawing a face, for example, you shouldn't try to draw everything at once, but perhaps first focus on the eyes, nose, mouth and then ears until you have mastered these fairly well. Then you can piece together your face piece by piece and then transfer the hairstyle as well.

Why learn to draw with a pencil?
Pencil and paper are an accessible starting point. You can begin with a few basic materials and concentrate on shapes, proportions and shading before exploring paint or other media.

Which pencils for drawing?
A small selection of pencils is enough to begin. Hard grades include 9H to 2H, while H, F, HB and B sit in the middle of the range. Softer grades such as 2B to 9B are useful for darker shading. The core is made from graphite and clay; it contains no lead.
9H–2H: Hard Pencils
In hard pencils, the clay content is higher and the graphite content is lower. The higher the number before the H (hard), the higher the clay content. This makes the lead relatively hard and you can use it to draw very fine lines. One problem is that the lead is very hard and scratches the paper a little, which is why hard pencils are well suited for technical drawings.
H, HB, F, B Medium Pencils
HB stands for “hard black”. Medium grades such as H, F, HB and B can be useful for writing, preliminary drawings and sketches.
2B–9B: Soft Pencils
In soft pencils, the graphite content is higher and the clay content is lower. The softer the lead, the stronger and coarser the abrasion and you can draw with more contrast. Soft leads make pencil drawing easy in an artistic sense. The only catch is smudging, but this can also be used as a method.
Why are pencil drawings easy?
The challenge is to find ideas with pencil drawing, but there are many variations and ways to create simple pencil drawings. Start with a word, lines or any shape to get warmed up. Techniques such as creating paintings with words are a special art. Other techniques such as one-line illustrations can also be used to create great works, because everyone starts small and no one can ever become great without practice.
Pencil drawings are detailed & labor-intensive
Detailed pencil drawings take time. Artists build lines and tones gradually, using both the point and the side of the pencil to develop texture, light and expression.

The pencil - a simple instrument
The pencil may be a simple instrument, but it can be used to create complex portrait pencil drawings. The reason for this is that the variety of pencils available opens up a wide range of creative possibilities for the artist.

Drawing With Pencil Wherever You Are
The different lead variations, such as thin leads with a high proportion of clay in the graphite core, allow you to draw very delicate, precise lines and depict the finest details cleanly. These leads, when only lightly applied, leave extremely fine, pale grey traces and give the drawing something unique. The soft leads with little clay in the graphite mixture, on the other hand, produce a rich, shiny black and are good for colouring in larger areas by hatching and for emphasising outlines. Pencil and paper are easy to take with you. Even, adequate lighting helps you judge lines and tones as you draw.

The shine of metal objects can also be reproduced excellently
Despite the monochrome color, a wealth of shapes and lines can be created, which bring even a monotonous pencil drawing to life. By polishing the colored areas with a cloth or a cotton ball that is pressed firmly, the shine of metal objects can also be reproduced excellently. If you also work out a few highlights with the eraser, the depicted object or the drawn eye will sparkle as if it were lifelike.

The effect of pencils is often underestimated.
This is probably because the pencil is one of the most well-known drawing instruments. Almost everyone uses pencils in their everyday lives. As a pure writing utensil or mostly also for notes and sketches. Looking for a personal birthday, anniversary or Valentine’s Day gift?
